Weston Swifts 2-2 Muswellbrook, Reggies went down 3-1

Weston Swifts had a 2-2 draw with Muswellbrook last Saturday at Orange Street.

Muswellbrook took an early lead through a cracking volley from just outside the box, however the Swifts equalised about 5 minutes before the break as Brad McNaughton found himself unmarked inside the box and headed home a goal.

Just after the break Brad Corcoran put the Swifts 2-1 ahead as he muscled past his defender and place his shot around the keeper.

The Swifts looked headed for 3 points until the dying minutes when Muswellbrook found an equaliser through another quality shot from outside the box.

Grant McDonald was voted man of the match.

Earlier, Reggies went down 3-1, with a much improved effort compared to the previous meeting between the two sides when Muswellbrook found the net 8 times.

The Eagles were 2-0 up before Brandt Thomas found the net for the Swifts in the second half. For a large period of the second half it looked as though the Swifts might have been able to find an equaliser, but in the end Muswellbrook put a third goal away to kill off the game.

Swifts go down in local derby

Weston Swifts suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat against local rival Kurri Kurri on the weekend.

Weston needed a victory to jump above Kurri on the table, however the Swifts were never in the match as Kurri opened the scoring on 20 minutes after some sloppy defending left the Kurri striker with far too much time inside the box and he was able to put the ball into the corner of the net.

The scores stayed at 1-0 until the half time break, at which time Weston were forced to make changes as Brenton O’Donnell was unable to continue. The changes never paid off however, as Kurri scored a further 3 goals in the second half. Grant McDonald was voted man of the match as his couple of attempts on goal were the only highlight in an otherwise dour day for the Swifts.

Reserve Grade went down 1-0, with Kurri scoring the winning goal just minutes after the kick off of the second half. It was an improved performance from the Swifts compared to the last time the two sides met when Kurri won 5-0. Adam Jordan was voted man of the match.

This Saturday Weston host Muswellbrook with First Grade kicking off at 3pm and Reserve Grade at 1-15.

Weston Swifts 0-0, Reggies pick up a 2-1 win

Weston Swifts hosted Belmont Tingira on Saturday and played out a scoreless draw.

In a tight contest, for the majority of the match neither side were able to gain the upper-hand. However the game exploded into action in the dying minutes as the Swifts attempted to capitalise on the tiring Belmont defence. Brad McNaughton hit the crossbar from a volley from just inside the 18-yard box, with the rebound falling to a Belmont defender to clear the danger.

Minutes later, Jason Haines had a free header on the back post, however his header was directed straight to the goalkeeper.

Brenton O’Donnell had the Swifts best opportunity, as a through ball put him behind the Belmont defence and one-on-one with the keeper, however his shot was millimetres wide of the post to leave the final score at 0-0.

Reserve Grade picked up their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win. The Swifts got off to a flying start in the 9th minute as Brent Currie scored from long range to put Weston ahead. 5 minutes later Lachlan Gourley put the Swifts 2-0 up after some good work hassling the Belmont defence.

Belmont clawed a goal back on the stroke of half time to make the scores 2-1.

Belmont attempted in vain to score an equaliser in the second half, but some outstanding saves from man of the match Jason Haines in goal and a defence lead by David Mahoney kept the Belmont Strikers at bay, with the final score remaining 2-1.

This Saturday the Swifts make the short trip to Birallee to take on Kurri Kurri in the local derby. First Grade kicks off at 3pm, with Reserves starting at 1-15pm.

Bellbird 2-0 Weston, Reggies lost 3-0

Weston Swifts slumped to yet another defeat over the weekend, this time away against local rivals Bellbird.

After having a couple of weeks off due to bad weather, the Swifts were in desperate need of a victory in order to keep their position in the middle of the table, however it was the home side who looked as though they were more determined to take the points and their hard work paid off on 15 minutes when they took the lead.

Weston struggled to create any clear goalscoring opportunities, however they managed to prevent Bellbird from adding to their tally and went to the break down 1-0. Continue reading
